Alexis Fowlkes and Sofia Weber lead the Cougars in scoring against the Mountaineers
HOUSTON– Behind goals from Alexis Fowlkes and Sofia Weber, the University of Houston Soccer program earned its first Big 12 Conference win after defeating West Virginia, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon at the Carl Lewis International Complex.
The win over West Virginia also marks the first Big 12 victory for Houston Athletics since the Cougars joined the league on July 1.
"It's been a long time coming," Head Coach Jaime Frias said. "I'm just happy for the team that we were able to get the result today."
Houston (7-5-1, 1-4 Big 12) found the match's first goal following a corner kick as sophomore forward Cameryn Maddox set up Fowlkes with the goal. This marks Fowlkes' second goal of the season.
West Virginia (3-7-3, 1-3-1 Big 12) immediately responded in the 27th minute of action as forward Taylor White scored the equalizer.
Six minutes later, senior midfielder Caitlyn Matthews began another scoring play off another corner kick, with Weber heading the ball into the net to give Houston the 2-1 victory.
With the win, the Cougars are now 1-0 against the Mountaineers, as Sunday's match was the first meeting between the two programs.
