Houston blocks 11 shots, Tiara Young drops career-high 24 points in loss
DALLAS – Despite a career-high 24 points from senior Tiara Young and the team blocking the second most shots school history with 11 total blocks, the University of Houston women's basketball team lost to SMU on Saturday in Moody Coliseum, 53-50.
The first half belonged to Young, who scored 13 points over the first two quarters of play. The senior guard scored 10 points in the first quarter and at one point scored eight-straight points for the Cougars (6-13, 3-3 American). The three-point loss marks the third-straight game Houston has played a game decided by five points or less, the first time since 2013 such streak has occurred.
A steal on an SMU (13-6, 4-3 American) inbounds play with 4.0 seconds left provided Houston with a game-tying three-point attempt by senior Bria Patterson, but the shot at the buzzer rattled in and out.
Six blocks in the first half helped Houston record the second-most blocks in a game with 11 blocks. Graduate Tatyana Hill had three blocks, redshirt senior Britney Onyeje, junior Laila Blair and Young each had two blocks.
SMU used a 7-0 run over the first three minutes of the second half to take a 31-30 lead. The Mustangs extrapolated on their lead, outscoring the Cougars 22-13 on 50 percent from the field.
Houston came roaring back in the fourth quarter to tie the scoring at 46-46 with 8:02 remaining and once again had a shot under seven seconds to tie the game but Blair's three-point attempt missed the mark.
