Junior becomes eighth Cougar to qualify for nation’s top amateur event
UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. – University of Houston junior Nicole Abelar will tee off at the U.S. Amateur Championship beginning Monday morning at Chambers Bay .
More than 150 amateur golfers from around the world will compete in 36 holes of stroke play on the 6,541-yard, par-73 course with the top 64 advancing to match play beginning Wednesday.
TEE TIMES
Abelar will compete in a group with Kaleiya Romero and Aliea Clark in each of the first two rounds, beginning off No. 1 at 10:17 a.m. (CDT) Monday.
The group begins Tuesday's Second Round at 3:17 p.m. (CDT) off No. 10.

ABOUT NICOLE ABELAR
Abelar punched her ticket to the U.S. Amateur Championship after posting a score of even-par 72 during a Qualifying Round at Crestmont Country Club on June 22..
She began her round in impressive fashion, draining birdies on each of her first two holes. After closing her first nine at +1 and opening her back nine with four straight pars, the Manila, Philippines, native sank two birdies in a three-hole stretch on Nos. 14-16 before finishing as one of only four players to shoot par or lower.
Competing in her first season with the Cougars after transferring from Coastal Carolina, Abelar was named to the All-American Athletic Conference Team after recording a score of 222 to lead Houston and earn a season-best fourth-place finish at The American Championships.
The Manila, Philippines native posted a 1-under 71 in the Second Round of The American Championships to tie her season-low round.
While it was her first postseason honor at Houston, it was far from the first postseason accolade of her career. Abelar finished second at the Sun Belt Championships as a freshman with the Chanticleers in 2020-21 and was named the league's Freshman of the Year and a member of the All-Sun Belt Conference First Team.
She also earned a place on the Sun Belt Championships All-Tournament Team.
COUGARS in US WOMEN'S AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY
Abelar will become the eighth Cougar to compete at the U.S. Women's Amateur Championship in the program's young history. This also marks the seventh time in the last nine Championships that Houston has been represented.
In the most recent appearance, teammate and junior Delaney Martin competed at the 2021 tournament at Westchester Country Club in Rye, N.Y., before falling just short of qualifying for match play.
Other Cougars to compete at the U.S. Amateur Championship include Karen Fredgaard (2020), Emily Gilbreth (2018), Maddy Rayner (2018), Megan Thothong (2016, 2015), Raegan Bremer (2016, 2014) and Assistant Coach Lucy Nunn (2015).
