
Rice Spoils Opener

BATON ROUGE, La. – The University of Houston volleyball team dropped its 2022 opener to crosstown rival Rice at LSU's Tiger Classic Friday afternoon 3-0 (25-22, 25-18, 25-18).
Rice (1-0) controlled the momentum from the third point of the match, hitting .307 on the day with three aces and six blocks. Houston's (0-1) 40 kills in the three-set match were nullified by 14 unforced errors.
Four different Cougars made their debuts in Scarlet and White. Sophomore Kellen Morin started the match for Houston, while senior Morgan Janda, redshirt freshman Barakat Rahmon and freshman Alana Torres-Rivera came off the bench for the Cougars.
Senior Abbie Jackson tallied double-digit kills for the 11th straight match dating to 2021 and led Houston with 13 kills. Graduate Isabel Theut chipped in 12 kills on a team-best .476 average (min. three attacks).
SET 1
Both teams tallied 14 kills and seven attacking errors in the set, but the Owls took the first set 25-22 thanks to a pair of aces and a Houston service error.
Jackson led all scorers with five kills in the first set, while graduate students Kortlyn Henderson and Isabel Theut chipped in four apiece in the first.
Houston scored the first two points of the match before Rice went on an 8-2 run and extended their lead to 13-8, forcing the Cougars into their first timeout of the season.
A trio of Jackson kills in the middle of the set closed the gap to 14-12 and then back-to-back blocks by Houston forced Rice into a timeout at 19-18.
SET 2
Rice's offense began to click in the second, hitting .359 in the set behind 17 kills.
The Owls put together a 5-0 run and a 7-2 run during the set to cruise to a 19-10 lead before taking the set 25-18.
SET 3
Rice hit .300-plus for the second straight set, improving on their previous set's .359 average with a .378 attacking clip in the third. The Owls tallied 17 kills for the second straight set and held Houston to a .200 attacking average in the final frame.
