Houston opens season vs. Rice in Baton Rouge, La.; faces LSU, Samford
HOUSTON – The University of Houston volleyball team opens its 2022 campaign on the road in Baton Rouge, La., at LSU's Tiger Classic Friday-Saturday. The Cougars open the season Friday against cross-town rival Rice at Noon CT before playing host LSU at 7:30 p.m. CT. Houston will finish the three-match tournament against Samford on Saturday at Noon CT.

QUICK HITTERS
- Abbie Jackson, Rachel Tullos, Kate Georgiades and Annie Cooke were named to The American All-Conference Preseason Team. Jackson and Tullos were unanimous selections.
- Houston was picked to finish second in the conference behind four-time defending champions UCF.
- Houston opens the season against Rice for the sixth time in school history, and faces the Owls in a neutral site match for the first time since 2012 at the C-USA Tournament in Tulsa, Okla.
- The Cougars are 4-1 all-time in season openers against Rice.
- The second match Houston plays on Aug. 26 will be just the fourth meeting against LSU all-time and the first in Baton Rouge since 2004, the Cougars' only win in the series in which the Tigers hold a 2-1 record.
- Houston's only meeting against Samford back in 2001 was played in Houston, but at a neutral gym at Rice's Autry Court during the Rice Invitational. Houston won the match 3-1.
- Texas, Mississippi State, Rice, South Alabama and two matches against conference foe UCF make up the five 2021 NCAA Tournament teams the Cougars will match up against in 2022.
- The 31-match slate features seven teams that won 20-plus matches in 2021, and four that won 25-plus. UCF and Texas each won 27 matches in 2021.
- The 2022 signing class sees the addition of six newcomers, split evenly between transfers and freshmen.
- Four of the six new Cougars are Texas-natives with a pair of Power 5 transfers.
- The Cougars return six of their seven starters in 2022 including all four The American All-Conference selections and All-American and The American Libero of the Year, Kate Georgiades.
- Taylor McColskey is the Cougars' newest assistant coach by way of Mississippi State.
- After finishing 25-7 in 2021, and winning a school-best 15 conference matches, Houston is coming off its best season since 1994.
- Under head coach David Rehr, the Cougars are 1-2 in season openers.
