New Zealand native defender earns fourth preseason honor
HOUSTON – University of Houston Soccer senior defender Emma Clarke has been named to the 2022 Mac Hermann Trophy Watch list, the United Soccer Coaches organization announced Thursday.
Clarke was among 60 student-athletes on the Watch List, including just three from the American Athletic Conference. The honor is the latest for the senior defender who has been tabbed to The American Preseason All-Conference Team, United Soccer Coaches Players to Watch List and Top DrawerSoccer.com's Top 100 Players to Watch List. The Christchurch, New Zealand, native and Hermann Trophy Watch List honoree is also a team captain.
The Hermann Trophy, presented annually by the Missouri Athletic Club, is the nation's highest individual honor, recognizing the National Player of the Year as determined by the voting of Division I coaches who are members of United Soccer Coaches.
In 2021, Clarke was named to The American All-Conference Second Team following her performance on the backline, helping the Cougars earn nine shutouts while leading the team to a historic 13-5-2 season. In The American Conference Tournament, Clarke was the first Cougar in program history named to the All-Tournament Team.
Fifteen women's players become Hermann Trophy semifinalists on Nov. 30 following completion of Division I All-America voting. On Dec. 7, three players will be named the 2022 finalists. The winner will be revealed on Jan. 6, 2023, at a ceremony from the historic Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis.
UP NEXT
Clarke and the Cougars will officially kick off their 2022 season at 7 p.m., Thursday with a match against Oklahoma at John Crain Field in Norman, Okla.
The game will be streamed on ESPN+ with Chad McKee (play-by-play) and Jema Cota (analyst) calling the action. Live stats will be also available here.
