No. 4 Houston tops No. 5 Tulsa for the first time in The American Championship
GREENVILLE, N.C. – All six hits by the University of Houston went for extra bases as the No. 4 Cougars came back down two runs to beat No. 5 Tulsa 5-2 in the First Round of the American Athletic Conference Softball Championship on Thursday at Max R. Joyner Family Stadium.
Houston (27-26-1) won its first American Championship game against Tulsa (18-30-1) in five tries and just its second-ever conference tournament game over the Golden Hurricane. The Cougars last topped the Hurricane in 2013 in the last C-USA Tournament.
Catcher Kati Ray Brown and shortstop Rock Benavides each doubled, second baseman Becca Schulte hit her first Division I triple, and center fielder Aspen Howie and first baseman Britaney Shaw each homered in the game.
Entering the bottom of the fourth, the Cougars looked at a two-run deficit. Howie cut the deficit in half with a solo home run off the scoreboard in right field.
Benavides tied the game with a double over the glove of Tulsa's left fielder to score left fielder Amanda Carden.
In the sixth inning, Houston scored three runs after Brown led off the inning with a double and then scored on Schulte's triple. Shaw's homer ignited the Cougar dugout and spackling of fans in red.
In relief, graduate Hannah Todd (11-9) won her 11th game of the season with 4.0 innings of scoreless work.
UP NEXT
With the win, No. 4 Houston will take on No. 1 UCF on Friday at noon CT in Max R. Joyner Stadium. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.
