Heartbreak Ends Houston’s Season

UCF walk-off ends Cougars’ season in semifinals
GREENVILLE, N.C. – A pinch hit walk-off home run in extra innings by top-seeded UCF ended the University of Houston's season with a 4-2 result in the semifinals of the American Athletic Conference Softball Championship on Friday from Max R. Joyner Family Stadium.
For the second time this season Houston (27-27-1) and UCF (45-12) needed extra innings to decide a winner, ultimately an eighth inning home run by a freshman pinch hitter sent UCF to the title game.
Immediately after UCF scored its first run of the game in the third inning, a one-hour and 49-minute delay halted the game. The Knights tacked on their second run in the fifth inning on a comebacker off relief pitcher Hannah Todd's (11-10) midsection.
The Cougars had gone 5.1 innings without a hit until shortstop Rock Benavides singled off the Knights' pitcher's ankle. With two outs, designated player Bethany Busch hit a 3-1 pitch 250-plus feet to right center to tie the game.
Houston had a pair of baserunners in the seventh with one out but stranded both in the frame.
In the bottom of the seventh, UCF loaded the bases after a pair of two-out singles and an intentional walk to the nation's fifth-best RBI producer Jada Cody, but a strike out by Todd sent the game to extra innings.
The Cougars had a base runner in scoring position in the eighth inning as well but were unable to capitalize.
