McMillan, Cougars Walk Off Shockers
4/3/2022 4:54:00 PM | Baseball
The Cougars (19-9, 2-1 American) overcame a two-run deficit, scoring twice in the eighth, to tie the contest at three-all on a pair of hits and as many Wichita State (12-15, 1-2 American) errors. Brandon Uhse, who clubbed a home run to start the scoring in the fourth, drove a one-out RBI-single into center.
With two outs and two aboard in the eighth, Cameron Nickens sent a dribble to the right side, reaching on a base hit and advancing to second as the throw sailed out of play. The base knock scored pinch hitter Samuel Tormos who drew a five-pitch leadoff walk.
In the ninth, Ryan Hernandez (leadoff single) was erased on a Malachi Lott fielder's choice. With a 1-0 count and one away, McMillan lined a double into right field. A diving attempt allowed the ball to skip to the wall, plating a hustling Lott from first base.
The walk-off victory was the first for the Cougars since McMillan walked off Cincinnati on May 8, 2021. The victory went to closer Ben Sears (4-0) who retired all three Shockers he faced after the Cougars tied the game in the eighth. The mayor of Walk-Off City. 🌇#GoCoogs x @IanMcMillan123 pic.twitter.com/hmuZJ15oVv

Houston tied the game at one-all on a solo home run from Uhse in the fourth inning. The 379-foot homer over the left field wall was his fourth of the season.
Wichita State immediately untied the game in the fifth as first baseman Garrett Kocis deposited a solo home run over the left field wall. One inning later, the Shockers chased Houston starter Derrick Cherry, as a double, pair of walks and hit by pitch led to a run.
In his third start of the season, Cherry allowed three runs on five hits alongside three walks and four strikeouts. Cougar reliever Cameron Prayer added a strikeout in his lone batter faced to strand the bases loaded in the sixth inning and Kyle LaCalameto tossed 2.0 scoreless alongside a pair of strikeouts.
