Cougars meet (8) Cincinnati/(9) East Carolina winner in The American Championship Quarterfinals at Noon, Friday in Fort Worth, Texas
FORT WORTH, Texas – The University of Houston Men's Basketball program takes its first steps in the postseason when it meets (8) Cincinnati at Noon, Friday, in the American Athletic Conference Championship Quarterfinals inside Dickies Arena.
#18/18 Houston enters The American Championship as the No. 1 seed after winning the league's regular-season title for the third time in the last four seasons, a first for the Cougars in any conference.
The Cougars (26-5 • 15-3 American) have won six of their last seven games. After playing three home games in a 5-day stretch and four games in the final eight days of the regular season, Houston should be rested for its Quarterfinal matchup.
(8) Cincinnati took a 74-63 win over (9) East Carolina in the first game of the American Athletic Conference Championship First Round on Thursday afternoon.
Earlier this week, five Cougars received postseason honors from the American Athletic Conference
Head Coach Kelvin Sampson was named the league's Coach of the Year for the third time in the last four years, while graduate forwards Fabian White Jr. and Josh Carlton were named to the league's first time. It was the first time since 2017 and only the second time since 1990 that the Cougars had two First-Team selections.
Senior guard Kyler Edwards was named to the Second Team after leading the Cougars with 13.6 points per game, while sophomore point guard Jamal Shead was named to the Third Team after leading Houston and The American with 5.9 assists per game and a 2.92 assist-turnover ratio.

With Monday's release, the Cougars were ranked in the Associated Press poll for the 44th consecutive week, extending their school record. Houston has been ranked in every AP poll since Jan. 20, 2019.
This is the fifth straight season under Sampson in which the Cougars were ranked for at least one week. Houston finished at No. 6 in the final AP and at No. 3 in the final Ferris Mowers Coaches polls a year ago after advancing to the sixth NCAA Final Four in school history.
