Cougars defeated by Bulls, look to Sunday match in Miami
TAMPA, Fla. – The University of Houston Tennis program lost 4-2 to USF on Friday from the USF Tennis Center in the first of five consecutive road matches to close the regular season.
The Cougars (11-7, 1-2 American) look to rebound at 11 a.m. CT Sunday against No. 35 FIU in Miami. USF improved to 5-11 on the season and 2-2 in conference play.
The Cougars competed first in doubles play, followed by singles play. On Court 2, Maria Dzemeshkevich and Laura Slisane fell 6-2 to USF's Grace Schumacher and Margriet Timmermans. Houston's Blanca Cortijo Parreno and Azul Pedemonti clinched their match against Amelie Boy and Sierra Berry, 6-2 on Court 2, giving the Cougars a chance to win in doubles.
The Bulls earned the doubles point on Court 3 with Laura Pellicer and Selin Yaylali defeating Elena Trencheva and Sophie Gerits, 6-2.
Houston looked to turn things around in singles play, and managed to get points on the board immediately. On Court 6, Gabriela Giraldo gave the Cougars their first points against USF's Selina Yaylali, 6-2, 6-1.
On Court 4, Gerits earned the point for Houston defeating her foe Amelie Boy, 6-2, 6-2. This marked Gerits' 10th singles win on the season.
Unfortunately, it was not enough for the Cougars as the Bulls' Schumacher defeated Dzemeshkevich (6-3, 6-2) on Court 1 giving USF the victory.
