Houston Falls Short to No. 40 FIU in Miami

Sophie Gerits collects Houston’s lone win in 4-1 defeat
No. 40 FIU improved to 12-3 on the season with the win. The Cougars (11-8) now look to conference play against Wichita State at 1 p.m. Friday from the Coleman Tennis Complex in Wichita, Kansas.
The Cougars competed first in doubles play, followed by singles play. On Court 2, Maria Dzemeshkevich and Laura Slisane fell 6-1 to FIU's Kristina Miletic and Andreea Velcea. Houston's Sophie Gerits and Elena Trencheva put up a battle against Basak Akbas and Yasmine Kabbaj, ultimately falling, 7-5.
Houston looked to turn things around in singles play, but fell short. For a second consecutive match on the weekend, Gerits helped Houston put a point on the board, defeating her foe Kristina Miletic, 6-4, 6-1. This marked Gerits' 11th singles win on the season.
