
Cougars Downed Twice on Friday

Houston gives up 8 runs in each game against Oklahoma, McNeese
HOUSTON – The University of Houston softball team lost both games to begin the Houston Classic against two NCAA Tournament teams on Friday.
Game 1
The number one team, Oklahoma (7-0), set the tone of the game early by scoring four runs in the first inning in route to an 8-0, 5-inning win.
The Cougars (4-3) got their only hit of the game, an infield single via third basemen Ja'Naiya Thomas, in the first inning. Thomas showed off her speed with a stolen base in the same inning.
Houston held Oklahoma scoreless in the second inning, but the Sooners scored three more runs in the third inning and another in the fifth on its way to its 7th win.
Game 2
McNeese (6-1) topped Houston in the third game of the Houston Classic, 8-3 with five late-inning runs.
Starting off strong in the bottom of the first, first basemen LA Matthews hit a double into the right-center field gap which sent third baseman Ja'Naiya Thomas home for the first run of the game.
The Cowgirls' designated player Adriana Ramirez hit a home run in the top of the second inning to tie the game 1-1. McNeese went on to score another run in the top of the second inning to make the score 2-1.
In the bottom on the second inning, second baseman Kylee Gibson hit her first home run of her career, scoring designated player Amanda Carden to bring the score to 3-2.
In the top of the third, second basemen for McNeese ,Caleigh Cross, hit a single which allowed catcher Chloe Gomez to score, tying the game at 3-3.
Both teams held their own in the fourth inning, going scoreless in the frame.
McNeese went on to score a pair of runs in the fifth inning and added three more in the sixth inning on its way to an 8-3 win.
UP NEXT
The softball team is back in action against Oklahoma and Texas State on Saturday. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. and 5:30 p.m., respectively.
