Cougars get revenge on future Big 12 foe Texas Tech, run-rule Dayton on Sunday
Game 1
Bouncing back after walking six batters against UTSA on Saturday, junior Megan Lee tossed 4.0 innings of two-hit work in the circle and improved to 2-0 in 2022 as Houston (4-1) topped Dayton 14-1 in the opener.
The Cougars gave Lee plenty of run support early as Houston plated seven in the first inning.
A bases loaded fielding error allowed one run to score, a single down the left field line plated another run, another single scored two more Cougars before the first out was recorded, a sacrifice fly by redshirt senior Rock Benavides.
Catcher Kati Ray Brown then blasted her first home run of 2022 with a shot off the batter's eye in center field.
Houston then scored five more in the third inning all with two outs. A single by center fielder Aspen Howie plated a pair, a single by second baseman Becca Schulte scored two more and first baseman LA Matthews' second hit of her three-hit game scored one more.
Brown jumped on a pitch in the fourth inning for her second home run of the game, it was the second two-home run game of her career and put the Cougars up 13-1. Left fielder Bethany Busch hit her first home run of 2022 in the fourth inning as well.
Game 2
Houston got revenge against Texas Tech for its 1-0 loss on Saturday night with a 3-1 win over the Red Raiders in the Houston Invitational finale.
Texas Tech went up early on Houston with a run in the first inning. A lead-off double was driven in two batters later with another double.
All three of Houston's runs were scored in the fourth inning, all started by a one-out hit by pitch drawn by shortstop Rock Benavides. Pinch hitter Angel Morales walked on four pitches and was pinch run for by sophomore Amanda Carden. A single by Brown plated Benavides and tied the game.
A wild pitch plated Carden to give the Cougars the lead and a bloop single by designated player Kylee Gibson scored Brown.
Senior Kenna Wilkey didn't need any more run support as the righty tossed 7.0 innings, striking out five without issuing a walk. Wilkey pitched every day of the tournament, starting two games and finished the weekend 2-0 in 13.1 innings pitched, allowed just five hits with a 0.53 ERA and added a save.
