Houston opens 2022-23 slate at Louisiana on Monday
HOUSTON – The University of Houston women's basketball team opens its 2022-23 season on the road at Louisiana in Lafayette, La., on Monday in the 11th all-time meeting between the two programs.

THE GAME

- Louisiana beat Spring Hill College on Wednesday night in an exhibition 77-33.
- Houston looks to make it four-straight wins against Louisiana.
- The Cougars have not lost to the Rajin' Cajuns this century, last falling in 1999 to Louisiana.
- Junior Laila Blair has scored in double figures in six-straight games.
- Assistant Coach Mansa El returns to the Houston bench as an assistant after two seasons as a Graduate Assistant (2014-16).
- Senior Britney Onyeje scored a game-high 16 points in the last meeting between the two teams in 2021.
- Graduate Tatyana Hill wrangled in 10 rebounds and three blocks in the last meeting in 2021.
- Down one point at halftime, the Cougars outscored the Rajin' Cajuns 16-8 in the third quarter and then 21-14 in the fourth quarter to earn the win 63-51.
- Seniors Bria Patterson and Onyeje each recorded a trio of steals in the game.
- Destiny Rice led the offensive charge for Louisiana with a team-high 13 points but committed six turnovers.
- Junior Laila Blair was a unanimous Preseason All-Conference First Team selection by The American coaches.
- The Cougars were picked to finish second in the league and received two first place votes in the Coaches Poll.
- Houston faces five teams in 2022-23 that received votes in the Preseason AP Poll. Kansas State, Florida, South Florida, UCF and Washington State.
- The Cougars are receiving votes in the USA Today/WBCA Preseason Coaches Poll. 2022-23 opponents, South Florida, SMU and UCF are also receiving votes in the preseason poll.
- Blair was one of three players in The American in 2021-22 to make six 3-pointers in one game and the only player in the conference with two games of six-plus 3-pointers made.
- Blair finished eighth in the league in scoring in 2021-22 (13.3 ppg).
- Graduate Tatyana Hill finished seventh in the league in rebounding in 2021-22 (7.3 rpg).
