Cougars tip off at 7 p.m. inside the Fertitta Center, looking to move to 3-0 in 2022-23
HOUSTON – Winners of its first two games to open the season, the No. 3 University of Houston Men's Basketball program returns to the Fertitta Center to play host to Oral Roberts at 7 p.m., Monday, in the first game of the Cougar Classic.
Houston enters the first of this week's three games following an 81-55 win over Saint Joseph's in the first game of the Veterans Classic from Alumni Hall on the campus of the U.S. Naval Academy on Friday. In the first meeting against the Hawks, freshman forward Jarace Walker scored a game-high 23 points with eight rebounds, two assists and a pair of steals.
Junior forward J'Wan Roberts added 19 points and a game-high 12 rebounds for the Cougars' first double-double of the season and the third of his career.
Allowing only 16 field goals, the Cougars set Veterans Classic records for biggest win and fewest field goals allowed.
This season, Roberts and Walker are tied for the team lead with 15.5 points per game with Walker's 10.0 rebounds per contest leading all players.
Junior point guard Jamal Shead has dished out a team-high 17 assists with only two turnovers in nearly 66 minutes of action. The Manor, Texas, native ranks sixth in the nation with 8.5 assists per game.
Preseason First-Team All-American Marcus Sasser ranks third on the team with 14.0 points per game and is tied for the team lead with 3.0 steals per game. The Dallas native needs only 118 more points to become the 50th 1,000-Point scorer in Houston career history.
Monday's game will be the first of three games in the Cougar Classic. On Tuesday, Oral Roberts faces Texas Southern at 7 p.m., Tuesday, in H&PE Arena on the TSU campus. The Cougars meet Texas Southern at 7 p.m., Wednesday, inside the Fertitta Center.
