#3 Men’s Hoops Takes on Saint Joseph's on Friday

Cougars tip off at 5 p.m. (CST) inside Alumni Hall in Veterans Classic
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Fresh off a dominating win in its season opener, the University of Houston Men's Basketball program continues it season when it meets Saint Joseph's in the Veterans Classic at 5 p.m. (CST) Friday inside Alumni Hall.
The No. 3 Cougars enter Friday's game following an impressive 83-36 win over Northern Colorado in the season opener inside the Fertitta Center on Monday.
It was the Cougars' biggest season-opening win since a 101-54 victory over Alabama A&M on Nov. 10, 2018. It also was the fewest points allowed by the Cougars in a season opener since a 38-29 win at Texas A&M on Dec. 8, 1951.
Returning to action after missing most of the 2021-22 season following foot surgery, senior Preseason All-American guard Marcus Sasser led all players with 21 points and four 3-pointers. The Dallas native needs only 125 more points to become the 50th member of the Cougars' career 1,000-Point Club.
Sasser wasn't the only Cougar making a return this week. Junior guard Tramon Mark also missed most of the 2022-23 campaign following shoulder surgery, but the Dickinson High product totaled six points with five rebounds and an assist in the win against the Bears.
Making his collegiate debut, freshman forward Jarace Walker scored eight points and grabbed a team-high 12 rebounds, including six offensive boards. The New Freedom, Pa., native posted the highest rebound total by a freshman in their Houston debut since center Emmanuel Adeife grabbed 15 rebounds in a 131-62 win over Florida Tech in the 2005-06 season opener on Nov. 22, 2005.
It also was the most rebounds by any Cougar in their Houston debut since then-junior forward Devin Davis grabbed 12 boards in a 93-52 win over Morgan State inside Hofheinz Pavilion on Nov. 11, 2016.

• As the Cougars prepare to compete in the Veterans Classic on Friday evening, Head Coach Kelvin Sampson and several staff members have ties to the military.
• In 2006, Sampson joined several coaches and sports personalities in Operation Hardwood II in Kuwait as part of Hoops with the Troops. Sampson coached a team in the USO event and learned about military life in Kuwait and the Kuwaiti culture. He also rode in a tank and Bradley fighting vehicle, visiting troops at Camp Arifjan medical hospital, toured the Humvee up-armor facility and held a basketball clinic for children in Kuwait City.
• Jamal Shead's parents, Lysa and Elvin Shead, served as E-4s in the U.S. Army and will be at Friday's game.
• Trey Houston, son of Associate AD for Sports Medicine John Houston and his wife, Amie, is a senior at the U.S. Naval Academy and will be at Friday's game.
