Houston closes out homestand Sunday against Tulsa at 1 p.m.
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Soccer program registered 13 shots in the match on route to collecting a 1-1 home draw against conference in-state opponent SMU on Thursday evening at the Carl Lewis International Complex.
Â
The Cougars (5-4-3, 1-1-2 American) tally their second draw in American Athletic Conference action while the Mustangs (6-2-4, 1-2-1 American) picked up their first draw in conference play this season.
Â
The first key moment of the game occurred when forward Cordelia Cross drew a foul near the top of the 18-yard box to create the first chance of the game for the Cougars.
Â
Off the set-piece, midfielder Samantha Wiehe tucked a right-footed shot into the back of the net to give Houston a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute. The goal tallied her second of the season, both coming off set-pieces.
Â
Trailing early, SMU responded five minutes later with goal to equalize in the 20th minute scored by forward Jewel Boland.
Â
With the match all square at 1-1, Houston pushed forward on the attack to create three chances in the next 10 minutes of play, forcing two SMU saves.
Â
Continuous open play near the end of the half led to a scoring chance by defender Emma Clarke with a shot saved by goalkeeper Tatum Sutherland. The Cougars mustered one last shot in the first half before both squads entered the locker rooms with a goal each.
Â
SMU took charge on the attack throughout the second half as Houston's backline pushed through to block and save several scoring chances inside the box.
Â
Forward Janna Singleton struck a shot to the top right corner, forcing a save off the post before midfielder Adriana Hutson's rebound steered just wide of the net. SMU escaped Houston's strong attack in the final five minutes of the match and snuck out with a 1-1 draw after time expired.
Â
Singleton posted two shots on goal for the night while goalkeeper Haley Woodward tallied four saves on five shots on target.
