
Volleyball Wins 13th Straight, Sweeps East Carolina

HOUSTON – The No. 23 University of Houston volleyball team used double-digit kill performances from graduate Isabel Theut and senior Abbie Jackson to sink the East Carolina Pirates, 3-0, in front of another record crowd at the Fertitta Center on Sunday afternoon.
Houston (21-2, 12-0 The American) posted its third consecutive straight-set win and sixth of the 13-game winning streak. The Cougars now hold a 17-9 advantage in the all-time series and have won the last three against East Carolina (8-16, 3-9 The American).
The Cougars have a 11-0 record at home this season. The home winning streak is the seventh longest active streak in the country, while the team's overall 13-game streak is the sixth.
In addition to her 15 kills and .481 hitting percentage, Jackson tied the program's all-time service aces record with two in the match, bringing her career total even with Sami Sawyer's 140 between 1993-1996.
Senior Morgan Janda led the match with 23 assists, while junior Kate Georgiades paced both teams with 16 digs. Theut led the team for the 13th time this season with 16 kills.
The team is now a perfect 6-0 this season when hitting above .300 and is an unblemished 17-0 when doing so under Head Coach David Rehr.
SET ONE
The match started back-and-forth, with both teams shutting down any potential runs and remaining tied at 15-15 shortly after the media timeout.
Houston surged ahead following, posting a 3-0 run to take the lead, 18-15, then a 7-0 run to win the set, 25-17.
Theut and Jackson controlled the attack in the first set, with Theut going 6-for-9 with a .667 efficiency and Jackson hitting 5-for-7 with a .714 percentage and neither tallying a single error.
SET TWO
The Cougars maintained the momentum into the second set, quickly jumping out to a 9-5 lead. After ECU evened the score at 10-10, Houston was able to post short runs and hold off any Pirate surges to take the set, 25-20.
Theut and Jackson again led the offense, each posting six kills. Junior Annie Cooke led play with six assists and Georgiades earned seven digs in the frame.
SET THREE
Houston refused to let its foot of the gas in the third set. Using an 8-0 run to jump to a 10-2 lead, Houston would also post a 4-0 run and a 3-0 run to claim the set, 25-12, and the match, 3-0. Freshman Kennedi Bray recorded her first career kill at match point to seal the win.
The Cougars' dominance held ECU to a .400 side-out percentage (10-for-25) and limited ECU to a -.192 hitting percentage in the final set. Senior Rachel Tullos led the way in the final set with a .667 hitting efficiency via four kills on six attacks. Janda notched eight assists, while Georgiades recorded another seven digs.
UP NEXT
The Cougars cap a five-game homestand as Tulane visits the Fertitta Center at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The team then goes on the road for three games, starting with Cincinnati at 5 p.m. on Friday.
