FIVE THINGS TO KNOW |
-
The Cougars are 11-5 in games following the off week since the 2007 season, outscoring opponents 522-392. A season ago, Houston running back Alton McCaskill IV scored a 25-yard touchdown on the first play of overtime to highlight a 31-24 victory against East Carolina in the return to play.
-
Houston is no stranger to success on the road. The Cougars are 7-2 in their last nine American Athletic Conference road contests. In 2021, the Cougars went undefeated in road regular season games for the fifth time in program history (2021, 2011, 1988, 1979, 1952).
-
Houston is the only FBS program in the country to recover an onside kick and return a kickoff for a touchdown in a single game this season. The Cougars accomplished both in the fourth quarter last time out at Memphis. Jayce Rogers returned a kickoff return 100 yards for a score with 7:47 to play in the fourth quarter and Kyle Ramsey's onside kick was recovered by Christian Trahan with 1:14 remaining.
-
Houston has had its share of tough luck with injuries this season. The Cougars were without four starters (WR Joseph Manjack IV, FS Gervarrius Owens, CB Art Green and DE Derek Parish) in an American-opening loss to Tulane. Parish, who set an American Conference record for sacks (4.5) and tackles for loss (6.5) at Texas Tech, is out for the season (torn bicep). Cornerback Alex Hogan will miss the remainder of the season after suffering a left knee injury at Memphis.
- Houston's first six opponents are a combined 26-14 with six of the 14 losses coming against Top 25 opponents. UTSA is 5-2 and has won four straight games. Texas Tech is 3-3 with all three losses against Top 25 opponents. Kansas is 5-2. Rice is 3-3 including a win at Louisiana which snapped the nation's longest win streak (15). Tulane is 6-1 and 3-0 in The American while Memphis is 4-3 and 2-2 in The American.
