Sophomore forward Ja’Vier Francis leads all with 10 rebounds inside Fertitta Center
HOUSTON – University of Houston junior guards Tramon Mark and Jamal Shead poured in a team-high eight points apiece, and sophomore forward Ja'Vier Francis led all player with 10 rebounds as the White Team took a 23-14 win in the Cougars' Red-White Scrimmage inside the Fertitta Center on Saturday morning.
Playing two 8-minute periods, the White team jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first minute and never trailed in the win. The White squad connected on 45.0 percent (9-of-20) from the field while limiting Red Team to only 19.2 percent (5-of-26) and outrebounded its rivals 20-16.
The Red Team moved to within 9-7 following graduate center Darius Bowser's layup with nine seconds left in the opening period. However, Shead drained a 3-pointer 16 seconds into the final period, and the Red Team would move no closer the rest of the way.
Redshirt freshman guard Emanuel Sharp – making his Houston debut after sitting out the Spring 2021 semester a year ago – buried a pair of free throws with 6:30 remaining in the final period to pull Red to within 14-11, but Shead and Mark followed with jumpers for an 18-11 White advantage.
After sitting out most of the 2021-22 season following shoulder surgery in December 2021, Mark connected on 4-of-5 shots from the field with two rebounds and an assist. Shead, who was a Preseason All-American Athletic Conference selection by the league's head coaches, added eight points on 2-of-3-shooting with two rebounds, an assist and steal.
Playing all 16 minutes, Francis was a rebounding force for the White Team with 10 boards, including a pair of offensive boards. The New Orleans native started the White scoring for the day after grabbing an offensive rebound and putting it back up and in less than a minute into the contest.
Junior forward J'Wan Roberts led the Red Team with seven points and six rebounds, including a game-high four offensive boards.
Making their Houston debuts, freshman forward Jarace Walker totaled three points with four rebounds and a blocked shot while freshman guard Terrance Arceneaux added two points with two rebounds and a steal for the White Team.
Sharp posted five points with a 3-pointer, rebound and steal for the Red Team.
Prior to the Red-White Scrimmage, Head Coach Kelvin Sampson's welcomed hundreds of grassroots level coaches (high school, middle school, AAU) from across the area to the arena for his annual Coaches' Clinic.
