Swimming & Diving Concludes Day One of Weekend Action

Diving sweeps 1-meter and 3-meter boards
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Swimming & Diving program split to compete in two separate locations across the city of Houston Friday. Houston's diving team began the morning hosting the Houston Diving Invitational at the CRWC Natatorium while the swim team competed at the Rice Competition Pool in the afternoon.

The diving team opened up the day with the 1-meter event with fifth year senior Katie Deininger placing first with a top score of 294.55. Senior Jolie Blodgett earned second (281.90) and sophomore Josie Graves placed third (273.75) with both divers earning Zone cuts in the event.

Deininger made it a sweep on the springboards with her score of 313.30 on the 3-meter. Graves scored a 313.30 to earn second, while junior Hedda Grelz scored a 303.55 to wrap up the podium for Houston.

Across the city at the Rice Fall Splash, Abbie Alvarez, Alondra Ortiz and Emma Wright led the Cougars to three first-place wins against Rice and Incarnate Word.

Alvarez and Ortiz went one and two in the 100-yard IM with times of 58.44 and 59.05.

For a second consecutive week, Wright placed first in the in the 100-yard freestyle clocking in at 50.64.

Freshman Ortiz earned her first collegiate career first-place finish with Cougars in the 400-yard IM coming in with a time of 4:24.97.

The Cougars return to the CRWC Natatorium to host their first dual meet of the season on Saturday, Nov. 5 against American Athletic Conference rival Tulane. Fans can attend the meet free of charge with no student claim necessary. Â
