Kyler Edwards Named The American Player of the Week
1/24/2022 1:00:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Senior guard averaged 24.0 points, 7.5 rebounds and 5.5 assists per game in two wins last week
It was the third weekly award for Edwards during his collegiate career and his second as a Cougar in The American.
It also was the third straight week in which a Cougar earned the honor as graduate forward Josh Carlton received the honor on Jan. 10.
In home wins over South Florida and East Carolina inside the Fertitta Center, Edwards averaged 24.0 points, 7.5 rebounds and 5.5 assists per game to lead the Cougars in all three categories. The Arlington, Texas, native also topped the team in minutes (62), free throws (10), free throw attempts (12) and free throw percentage.
He started his week with 23 points and six 3-pointers in a 74-55 win over South Florida. He also grabbed seven rebounds while dishing out four assists.
In the final game of the week, Edwards posted his third straight 20-point game with a game-high 25 points against East Carolina. The senior transfer flirted with a triple-double as he led all players with seven assists and added eight rebounds, including a pair of offensive boards.
With the wins, the Cougars moved to 17-2 overall and won their ninth straight game. Houston also improved to 6-0 in American Athletic Conference play. It is only the fourth 6-0 start in any conference in program history.
This season, Edwards leads the available Cougars with 14.4 points per game and 52 3-pointers and is a close second with 5.9 rebounds per contest. He is one of only three players to rank among The American's Top-10 leaders in both scoring and rebounding.
UCF guard Darius Johnson was named the league's Freshman of the Week. UCF forward Cheikh Mbacke Diong, Cincinnati guard Jeremiah Davenport, Memphis guard Tyler Harris, SMU guard Kendric Davis and Tulane guard Jaylen Forbes were named to the Honor Roll.
