Houston drops road contest to Memphis 57-53

The women's basketball team was unable to hold of the Tigers in the Saturday matchup
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The women's basketball team was not able to hold off Memphis losing to the Tigers 57-53 on Saturday afternoon.
Tiara Young led Houston (9-10, 2-5) in scoring with 11 points while Laila Blair contributed 10 points as well as leading the team with six rebounds.
First Quarter
The two teams traded points to open the first quarter. Eryka Sidney connected on a 3-pointer to tie the game at 10-all and started a 9-2 run to take a 16-12 lead. Memphis shortened the lead but a buzzer-beater basket from Tamara Nard put Houston back in the lead at the end of the first at 20-18.
Second Quarter
The Tigers picked up their offense in the second quarter, scoring 14 points to Houston's six, making the score 32-26. The Cougars fought back in the final minute with points from Kamryn Jones and Julia Blackshell-Fair closing half with Memphis ahead 34-30.
Third Quarter
To open the third quarter, the Cougars went on a 10-2 run to take a 40-39 lead over Memphis. After two free throws from the Tigers, Houston took a 47-43 lead with a Fatou Diagne layup. The quarter closed on a jumper from Tiara Young as the Cougars pushed ahead at 49-45.
Fourth Quarter
The fourth quarter was a defensive battle between the two teams. Memphis opened the quarter with four straight points to tie the game at 49-49. The two teams traded points before the Tigers went on a five-point streak and held the Cougars scoreless for the final four minutes of the game. Despite staying with Memphis until the final seconds of the game, the Tigers took the win 57-53.
