
Houston Rolls to Win over Wichita State on Sunday

Abbie Jackson, Bridget Wallenberger post double-digit kills as Cougars move to 11-3 overall
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Volleyball program used quick starts in each set on the way to a 3-0 win (25-20, 25-18, 25-18) over Wichita State on Sunday afternoon inside the Fertitta Center.
Less than two days after a tough 3-2 loss to Tulsa in the American Athletic Conference opener for both teams, the Cougars rebounded in impressive fashion.
Houston scored at least four of the first five points in each set and trailed only one time in the second set during the entire match.
With the win, the Cougars improved to 11-3 overall moved to 1-1 in American Athletic Conference play. Wichita State fell to 6-5 overall and 0-2 in league play.
Junior outside hitter Abbie Jackson led the way with 14 kills and added 11 digs for her team-leading fourth double-double of the season. Senior middle blocker Bridget Wallenberger finished with 11 kills for her second straight match in double digits.
Two days after posting 41 digs for the third-highest single-match total in Houston history in the loss to Tulsa, sophomore libero Kate Georgiades led all players with 18 digs. Sophomore setter Annie Cooke led the way with 33 assists in the win.
In the first frame, the two teams went back and forth in a close match before the Shockers moved to within 15-13 following Sophie Childs' kill. However, the Cougars took advantage of a Kennedy Warren kill, Torie Frederick service ace and three Shocker errors to build a 20-13 lead.
Houston would not lead by fewer than four points in taking the first set 25-20.
In the second set, the Cougars again jumped out early, building a 4-1 lead before the Shockers stormed back to within 10-9 on a kill from Natalie Foster. Fortunately, Houston used a 9-2 run over the next 11 points to build an insurmountable advantage in a 25-18 set win.
Jackson led the way with three kills and an ace, while Wallenberger added two kills, and Cooke ripped a pair of aces.
The Cougars wasted little time in the final frame in setting the tone, building a 7-1 lead. The Shockers moved no closer than four points for the rest of the way.
Sophia Rohling led Wichita State with nine kills, while Lily Liekwig totaled 11 digs. Kayce Litzau dished out a team-high 27 assists in the loss.

Following Sunday's match, the Cougars hit the road for four consecutive contests. The road swing begins at 6 p.m., Sept. 29, against Tulane in New Orleans and continues at Noon (CDT), Oct. 3, against Temple in Philadelphia.
From there, the Cougars head to Florida to face UCF (Oct. 8) and South Florida (Oct. 10).
The Cougars return to the friendly confines of the Fertitta Center to play host to SMU (Oct. 15) and Memphis (Oct. 17) in American Athletic Conference play.
