Cougars start conference play with a bang outscoring the Golden Knights, 1-0
HOUSTON – Houston Soccer, now 7-1-1, began its American Athletic Conference play on Thursday with a huge win over No. 14 nationally-ranked UCF (4-3-0).
Â
The game-winning goal was scored in the 48th minute by redshirt-senior Jazmin Grant. She was assisted by graduate student Zionah Browne who has now tallied seven assists this season. Grant has totaled two goals adding to her all-time record of six.
Â
The Cougars have now faced the Golden Knights 17 times since 2005. However, the Thursday night triumph is the second win against UCF in program history, as well as the second consecutive defeat following a 3-1 victory in Orlando which concluded last season for Houston.
Â
Redshirt-freshman goalkeeper Mikaela Gracia once again recorded a clean sheet in the net. She recorded one impressive save during an early first half on-target penalty kick. A team save was recorded immediately after with another off-target shot attempt by UCF. Her save assisted in clinching the match and denying any points on the board for the Golden Knights.
Â
For the first time since a 2017 defeat over then-No. 21 Cincinnati, the Cougars defeated a top-25 nationally-ranked program.
Â
When asked about the impressive win, Head Coach Diego Bocanegra stated, "It always feels good to win the conference opener. It feels even better when you're playing a nationally-ranked team and national powerhouse in UCF."
