Houston signal caller named to ninth annual watch list
HOUSTON – Houston quarterback Clayton Tune has been named to the ninth annual Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Watch List, announced Thursday.
The award recognizes the top offensive player in Division I football who also exhibits the enduring characteristics that define Earl Campbell: integrity, performance, teamwork, sportsmanship, drive, community and tenacity; specifically, tenacity to persist and determination to overcome adversity and injury in pursuit of reaching goals.
In addition, the nominee must meet one or more of the following criteria: born in Texas and/or graduated from a Texas High School and/or played at a Texas-based junior college or four-year college.
Tune heads into his junior season ranked 12th in Houston program history in career completions (335) and 14th in career passing touchdowns (33). A season ago, the team captain threw for multiple touchdowns in six of eight games while passing for 2,048 yards.
The Carrollton, Texas, native is among 53 student-athletes on the watch list including 10 quarterbacks. Tune is among seven American Athletic Conference student-athletes and is the lone league quarterback on the list.
The watch list will be narrowed to up to 16 semifinalists in November and up to five finalists in December. They will be selected by broadcasters, commentators, journalists, fans and previous winners. The finalists will be brought to Tyler for The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Banquet scheduled for January 12, 2022.
Tune is among 17 starters returning from last year's squad. The Cougars open the 2021 season on Sept. 4 inside NRG Stadium for the Texas Kickoff against Texas Tech.
