Sophomore and '21 SBC Freshman of the Year comes to Houston from Coastal Carolina
HOUSTON – Nicole Abelar has joined the University of Houston Women's Golf program after signing a scholarship agreement on Friday, Carolyn Macow Leatherwood Head Coach Lydia Gumm announced Friday.
Abelar will compete as a sophomore with the Cougars during the 2021-22 season following an award-winning freshman campaign at Coastal Carolina and will have three seasons of eligibility remaining.
"Nicole had a successful spring season. With her performance at the Conference Championships, it was exciting to see that she can score low and keep a round going," Gumm said. "Nicole is hard working and has a great personality and sets high goals and expectations for herself. She will fit our program really well."

As a freshman at Coastal Carolina during the 2020-21 season, Abelar was a leader for the Chanticleers. She led the team with a 73.65 scoring average and added four rounds of par or better.
The Metro Manila, Philippines, native finished second at the Sun Belt Conference Championships, thanks to a 66 in the Second Round, the lowest round in school history at a conference postseason event. She also was recognized as the league's Freshman of the Year.
She enjoyed two other second-place showings during the season after finishing second at the Battle at Old South and the River Landing Classic. In the latter tournament, she set school records with a 65 in the First Round and finished at 11-under 205.
Abelar was named the Sun Belt Conference Freshman of the Week following that performance.
She was also an award-winning student-athlete in the classroom, being named to the 2021 Sun Belt Conference Honor Roll and to the Dean's List.
Prior to entering the collegiate ranks, Abelar earned numerous honors in her junior career. She captured the title at the 2018 Canlubang Amateur Open in 2018 and successfully defended her title a year ago.
She finished third at the Philippine Junior Amateur Open in 2018 and led her team to a third-place finish at the Sea Amateur Team Championship. Abelar also posted third-place showing at the 2016 Sea Amateur Team Championship and the IJGA World Stars of Junior Golf.
