
Jane Figueiredo Coaches Great Britain to Gold Medal in Tokyo

Former Cougar diving coach helps Great Britain secure gold at Olympics
HOUSTON – Former University of Houston Diving Coach Jane Figueiredo saw two of her athletes stand atop the podium at the Tokyo Olympics after coaching Great Britain to a gold medal finish in the Synchronized 10-meter Platform.Â
Figueiredo coached British duo Tom Daley and Matty Lee to Olympic Gold by a margin of just 1.23 points and overall score of 471.81. With three dives left and sitting in third-place, the duo picked up 93.96 points in the fourth round to move to the top of the standings.Â
The Tokyo games mark yet another successful trip to the Olympics for the coaching legend. She competed at the 1984 games as a representative of Portugal and has coached at the games dating back to 1996. She coached Cougar greats Yulia Pakhalina and Anastasia Pozdniakova to silver in the 3-meter synchronized springboard in 2008. In 2004 under Figueiredo's tutelage, Russia took silver in the women's Synchronized diving, with Pakhalina capturing bronze in the 3-meter individual event. At the 2000 games, Figueiredo coached the Russian team to a pair of Gold medals in the women's 3-Meter Synchronized Springboard. Â
A 1987 graduate of UH, Figueiredo has gained the utmost respect from her peers with an extensive resume. A five-time All-American and 2010 inductee into the Houston Hall of Honor, she led the Houston Divers from 1990-2014. Figueiredo is a 12-time conference Coach of the Year after winning the honor 12 consecutive seasons from 2002-13, and four-time NCAA Diving Coach of the Year (2001,2003,2009,2010). She recruited and coached world-class talent at UH, including 14 divers who combined for 51 All-America honors and eight NCAA titles.Â
