Houston drops doubleheader finale
HOUSTON – Houston miscues helped result in a combined six runs for Cincinnati in the middle frames as the Cougars dropped the doubleheader finale, 7-0 to the Bearcats on Friday night from Don Sanders Field at Darryl & Lori Schroeder Park.
Cincinnati (23-20, 12-10 AAC) used an RBI-double and fielding error to go ahead 2-0 in the fifth. One inning later, the Bearcats sent eight hitters to the plate and extended their lead to six runs courtesy of three hits, an error, a wild pitch and fielder's choice.
Houston (16-25, 4-14 AAC) threatened in the eighth, loading the bases on a Dylan Post walk, Ian McMillan single and Skyler Trevino walk before Cincinnati starter Zach Segal buckled down. The right-hander added a pair of strikeouts and fly out to shallow right to end the threat.
Segal (5-3) tossed 8.0 scoreless frames, permitting four hits while walking three and striking out as many. The sophomore held Houston to 1-for-11 (.091) with runners aboard and kept the Cougars hitless (0-for-7) with runners in scoring position.
Houston starter Jaycob Deese (2-5) tossed 5.1 innings, allowing six hits and six runs (one earned) while walking three and striking out four. The sophomore permitted just two hits without a run over the first four innings before Cincinnati broke through in the fifth.
The Cougars received a steady relief performance from Colby Casey who tossed 1.2 scoreless frames, working around two hits and a walk with a strikeout. Layne Looney allowed three hits and a run while walking two and striking out three across 2.0 innings.
The teams return to action at 2 p.m. Saturday. Houston will send right-hander Ben Sears (2-3, 5.57 ERA) to the mound against southpaw Evan Shawver (2-1, 1.74 ERA).
