The first eight Memphis (16-34, 6-22 AAC) batters reached as part of a seven-run eighth inning. The Tigers capitalized on six walks in the frame including two with the bases loaded. Max Hildreth's go-ahead RBI-single was one of four hits in the eighth.

Houston starter Matt Lazzaro, who entered the contest with 7.2 innings pitched on the season, tossed 6.0 scoreless frames, striking out eight batters alongside five hits and one walk. The southpaw held Memphis to 1-for-9 (.111) with runners aboard and 1-for-7 (.143) with two outs.

The Cougars (19-28, 7-17 AAC) struck two solo homers in the third. Brad Burckel clobbered his fifth of the season to lead off the frame. Two batters later, Ryan Hernandez deposited his 10th homer of the season over the wall in right center for a 3-0 advantage.

Houston's Skyler Trevino registered his first career RBI, driving in Steven Rivas on a two-out single into right field to start the scoring in the second, and added an RBI-single into right field for a 4-0 advantage in the eighth.

Lazzaro preserved the three-run advantage in the sixth, stranding a pair thanks to an infield flyout and lineout to second. One inning later, Maddux Miller entered and left the bases loaded thanks to a strikeout and fielder's choice.
