ORLANDO, Fla. – UCF right fielder Jordan Rathbone struck a three-run home run, erasing a one-run deficit while lifting the Knights to a 3-1 victory over Houston in the series opener on Thursday afternoon from John Euliano Park.
Rathbone, who entered the day second in the league in home runs, crushed his team-leading 14th over the left field wall in the fifth. The two-out long ball was the lone blemish against reliever Jaycob Deese (2-6), who allowed five hits and three earned runs in 4.2 innings.
With the win, UCF improved to 25-28 overall and 15-14 in American Athletic Conference play. Houston fell to 19-29 overall and 7-18 in league action.
Houston designated hitter Samuel Tormos provided a two-out RBI-single to start the scoring the second. The hit, which scored Brandon Uhse (one-out walk) was his fifth of the season, all coming in the last nine games.
Cougar starter Robert Gasser, on a pitch count ahead of next week's conference tournament, tossed 2.0 scoreless innings, permitting one hit while striking out a pair. The Cougars recorded two putouts at third base in the first including a 9-4-5 relay to cut down the leadoff batter.
Ryan Hernandez notched his team-leading 15th multi-hit performance. Tyler Bielamowicz extended his hit streak to seven games and worked two walks. Brad Burckel and Brandon Uhse, Houston's leader in walks, also drew two free passes.
UCF starter Hunter Patteson tossed 2.0 innings, permitting two hits and a run alongside one walk and three strikeouts.
The teams return to action at 5:35 p.m. Houston right-hander Ben Sears (2-3, 5.62 ERA) will take the mound. UCF has not announced a starter. The contest can be seen on ESPN+ and heard on Stretch Live.
