Cougars Overtake Tigers
5/15/2021 5:30:00 PM | Baseball
The Cougars scored in four consecutive innings between the third and sixth. Eight different batters recorded a hit including Tyler Bielamowicz who finished 2-for-4. Skyler Trevino (0-for-2) reached base twice and scored two runs. Ryan Hernandez (1-for-4) drove in two runs.
Houston (19-27, 7-16 AAC) put two across in the fifth, taking a 5-4 lead on a Dylan Post sacrifice fly. The Cougars sent seven batters to the plate in the frame and evened things up on an RBI-double from Steven Rivas.
Houston closer Derrick Cherry was strong in relief, locking up his fifth save and second in as many days. The right-hander used three pitches to strand two runners in the sixth and struck out Hunter Goodman to secure the win in the ninth. Cherry tossed 3.1 innings, allowing two hits and one run alongside four strikeouts.
After allowing four runs in the first inning, Houston starter Carter Henry (2-4) settled down. The senior allowed seven hits and four runs in 5.2 innings but held Memphis to 2-for-8 (.250) with runners in scoring position. He fanned a season-high six batters alongside three walks.
Houston was held hitless in the first two innings before awaking in the third. Hernandez trimmed Houston's deficit in half with a two-run single – Houston's third hit of the frame. One inning later, Samuel Tormos delivered a sacrifice fly to plate Post (leadoff single).
Houston added insurance in the sixth, helped by a failed pickoff attempt from Memphis (15-34, 5-22 AAC) catcher Goodman, sending Trevino racing home from second. The miscue allowed Houston to score for a fourth consecutive inning.
In the eighth, Brandon Uhse doubled and came home two batters later, on a Bielamowicz (2-for-4) RBI-single through the left side. Cougar leadoff hitters batted .444 (4-for-9) while the Cougars cashed in with runners aboard, batting .300 (6-for-20).
Memphis struck for four runs in the first two frames including a three-run first. Leadoff hitter Zach Wilson produced a single in each inning including a two-out, RBI-base knock in the second. Tiger starter Blake Wimberley permitted five hits and as many runs in 4.0 innings.
Houston and Memphis close the four-game series at 11 a.m. Sunday. The Cougars have not announced a starter. The Tigers will throw right-hander James Muse (0-0, 6.29 ERA). The contest can be heard on Stretch Live with Jeremy Branham on the call.
