HOUSTON – University of Houston senior Alexander Frances posted his third straight round of par or better with a 70 during the Final Round of the Bayou City Collegiate Classic to move into a tie for ninth with a 54-hole score of 4-under 212 on Tuesday afternoon.
As a team, the Cougars recorded a score of 289 in the Final Round and tied for third with a score of 851 on the 7,184-yard, par-72 course at Westwood Golf Club.
Beginning his day off No. 1, Frances started the round on the right foot with a birdie. After another birdie on No. 5, the Stege, Denmark, native ran into trouble with three bogeys on his last four holes to cap his front nine.
Fortunately, those would be the only bogeys on his scorecard for the rest of the day. After three straight pars, he returned to even par with a birdie on the par-4 13th hole and closed out his tournament with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 17-18.
He joined Abilene Christian's Francisco in the tie for ninth.
Senior Luke Long tied for 11th at 213, while senior Andrew Gibson moved up 36 places into a tie for 16th at 2-under 214 thanks to a Final-Round 66.
Playing as an individual, Gibson started his day off No. 10 and began the Final Round with three straight birdies. Despite a bogey on No. 15, he rebounded with another birdie on No. 17 and drained three birdies in a four-hole stretch on his back nine to join the Top-20 leaders.
Senior Matt Cole enjoyed his second straight sub-par round with a 71 and tied for 22nd at 1-under 215t, thanks to five birdies on his front nine.
Sophomore Austyn Reily tied for 27th at 216, while senior Logan Young tied for 37th at 218. Junior Braxton Watkins tied for 41st at 219, while freshman Hanseung Chang and sophomore Trip Morris tied for 48th at 220.
Sam Houston State captured the team title with a score of 835, while Florida Atlantic finished second at 847. The Cougars tied with Louisiana for third with No. 26 UTSA (854), Abilene Christian (865), No. 42 Arkansas State (866), North Texas (868), Rice (873) and Texas State (875) rounding out the Top 10 leaders.
Sam Houston State's Paul Chaplet used a Final-Round 63 to take the individual title at 14-under 202 to finish six strokes ahead of Florida Atlantic and Bearkat teammates William Holcomb. Luis Carrera (Sam Houston State) and Enrique Dimayuga (Florida Atlantic) tied for fourth at 209.
