BRYAN, Texas – The University of Houston Men's Golf program stood in fifth place with a score of 295 following the First Round of the Aggie Invitational at Traditions Club on Friday afternoon.
Senior Alexander Frances drained a team-high seven birdies and stood in second place with a 5-under 67. Starting his day off No. 1, Frances wasted little time in getting into red numbers with a birdie on No. 2 and added another one on No. 5.
After enduring a bogey on No. 6, the Stege, Denmark, native sank another birdie on the par-5 eighth hole and opened his back nine with another birdie on No. 10.
Frances enjoyed back-to-back birdies on Nos. 13-14 and drained his final birdie of the day on the 190-yard, par-3 16th hole.
No. 5 Texas held the First-Round lead at 283 to finish seven strokes ahead of No. 1 Oklahoma and No. 12 and host Texas A&M. No. 30 Louisville was in fourth at 292 with North Texas (297), Nebraska (298), No. 25 Texas Tech (298), No. 36 Baylor (298), No. 33 UTSA (300) and Rice (300) rounding out the Top-11 leaders.
Individually, Texas' Pierceson Coody stood atop the leaderboard with a 66. Following Frances, Texas A&M's Sam Bennett was in third at 68 with Oklahoma's Quade Cummins in fourth at 69.
Senior Andrew Gibson posted a 74 and was tied for 21st, while seniors Luke Long and Matt Cole and sophomore Austyn Reily were tied for 52nd with 77s.
The Second Round begins with 18 holes Saturday with the Final Round teeing off Sunday morning.

Following the Aggie Invitational, Houston takes its first step in the postseason when it tees off at the American Athletic Conference Championships at Southern Hills Plantation in Brooksville, Fla., on April 23-25.
The winner of the league's annual postseason event receives the automatic bid to NCAA Regional play.
