Tulane Takes Opener, 3-0

NEW ORLEANS – Houston could not solve Tulane starter Braden Olthoff as the No. 25 Green Wave tacked on insurance late to down the Cougars 3-0 in the four-game series opener Friday afternoon from Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
Â
Olthoff (5-1) struck out 12 Houston batters and worked around five hits in 8.0 innings. The right-hander, who did not allow a walk, held Houston to 1-for-10 (.100) with runners aboard and 0-for-4 (.000) with runners in scoring position.
Â
With the loss, Houston fell to 15-21 overall and 3-10 in American Athletic Conference play. Tulane extended its win streak to 11 consecutive and improved to 22-13 and 11-1 in league action.
Â
Houston starter Robert Gasser (5-4) allowed one run on five hits while walking a pair and striking out eight. The southpaw, who held Tulane to 1-for-7 (.143) with two outs, permitted three hits and a run in the first inning before holding Tulane scoreless over the next five frames.
Â
After getting into Houston's bullpen, Tulane used just one hit and capitalized on three walks and a hit by pitch to score a pair of runs in the seventh. Three-hole hitter Bennett Lee sent an RBI-single into right field and Chase Engelhard drew a bases-loaded, four-pitch walk.
Â
Gasser has tossed 5.0-plus innings in all 10 starts and allowed two-or-fewer runs in eight of 10 starts. The El Dorado Hills, California, native, who lowered his ERA to 2.13, has struck out six-plus batters in each of his last seven starts.
Â
The Cougars threatened in the sixth as pinch-hitter Samuel Benjamin set down a bunt single and Brad Burckel laced a single through the left side. A miscue on the bases stalled the momentum, however, and Houston ultimately stranded Burckel at second.
Â
The teams return to action for the doubleheader finale at 5:35 p.m. Houston will send right-hander Jaycob Deese (2-3, 4.70 ERA) to the mound against Tulane lefty Jack Aldrich (4-1, 3.50 ERA). The contest can be seen on ESPN+ and heard on Stretch Live.
