Late Run Fuels Tulane Win
4/30/2021 8:36:00 PM | Baseball
Tulane (23-13, 12-1 AAC) sent eight batters to the plate in the seventh, tying things up on a solo home run from leadoff hitter Collin Burns. Two batters later, Bennett Lee doubled down the right field line, scoring Jacob LaPrairie for a one-run advantage.
The Green Wave put things out of reach in the eighth, scoring six runs on four hits. Haydan Hastings provided a two-out, three-run double in the frame.
The Cougars (15-22, 3-11 AAC) pushed across a single run in each of the first three innings highlighted by a pair of Ryan Hernandez RBI-singles. Tyler Bielamowicz logged a hit in each of his first two at-bats including a one-out triple in the third.
Houston added on in the sixth. With Adam Becker at the plate and Dylan Post at third, reliever Clifton Slagel bounced a ball in. Hastings, the catcher, quickly recovered and found Post racing in. Post sidestepped and got his foot down, eluding the tag to score.
Cougar starter Jaycob Deese (2-4) allowed six hits and five runs (four earned) while walking three and striking out as many in 6.1 innings. The right-hander has tossed 5.0-plus innings in four of his five starts.
Tulane starter Jack Aldrich permitted eight hits and four runs while striking out seven and walking one in 5.1 innings. Despite producing nine hits, Houston batted .200 (2-for-10) with two outs and .231 (3-for-13) with runners aboard.
The teams return to action at 4 p.m. Saturday. Houston right-hander Ben Sears (1-3, 5.87 ERA) will face Tulane righty Donovan Benoit (3-1, 4.23 ERA). The game can be seen on ESPN+. Jeremy Branham will call the call via Stretch Live.
