HOUSTON – Ryan Wochomurka, who has spent the last six seasons as the head swimming coach at the University of Houston, has been named the head swimming coach at Auburn University.
Â
Wochomurka led the Cougars to five straight American Athletic Conference Women's Team Championships, capping off the 2021 season with Houston's best finish at the NCAA Championships since 2011.
Â
Wochomurka was named the American's Women's Coach of the Year in each of the last five seasons, dramatically raising the standard of the UH program during his six seasons at the helm. Academically, Houston's swimming and diving program consistently posted one of the top GPAs in the athletics department, including a 3.69 GPA during the spring 2020 semester.
Â
As a student-athlete at Auburn, Wochomurka was a 21-time All-American and helped the Tigers to three straight NCAA Championships from 2003-05.
Â
"It is impossible to thank Ryan properly for his impact on our swimming and diving program over the last six seasons," University of Houston Vice President for Athletics Chris Pezman said. "He has lifted our program to new heights and brought a championship mentality to our team that resulted in five consecutive conference titles and our best finish at the NCAA Championships in a decade.
Â
"I hope to see Ryan continue his success as he returns to his alma mater in this new opportunity. We wish his wife, Leigh, and their children, Hayes and Hallie, the best as they return to Auburn."
Â
"It is bittersweet to leave a city, university, program, and most importantly amazing student-athletes that have given and meant so much to my family over the last six years," Wochomurka said. "My heart is full knowing that the best is yet to come for this amazing group of women; they have built the culture of family and excellence that is Houston Swimming and Diving.
Â
"I am incredibly grateful to each and every student-athlete and person that has touched our program. Thank you to Senior Associate AD Bruce Gregory, Senior Associate AD/SWA DeJuena Chizer, and Director of Athletics Chris Pezman for your unwavering belief and support of my family and our student-athletes."
Â
A national search for his replacement will begin immediately.
