Success in first set not enough to lift Cougars
CINCINNATI – The University of Houston Volleyball team dropped its contest to Temple by a score of 3-1 (25-18, 23-25, 14-25, 18-25) in the semifinal of the American Athletic Conference Championship on Friday afternoon.
Houston's (13-6, 9-1 AAC) appearance in The American Championship marks the second time the Cougars have qualified for the conference championship. The Cougars are one of three schools to have qualified for The American Championship every year of the championship's existence, joining UCF and Tulane.
In Friday's matchup against the Owls (11-5, 4-4 AAC), the Cougars posted a .263 hitting percentage, the 11th time this season Houston has reached a clip of .200 or higher. Houston is 10-1 in those contests.
Junior Kortlyn Henderson paced the Houston offense to that mark, erupting for a match-high 19 kills off a .395 clip. It's her second match in a row where she nearly reached the .400 plateau. She was joined by sophomore Abbie Jackson (12) as those with double-digit kills against Temple.
Sophomore's Celeste Darling and Rachel Tullos also posted strong outings at the net, notching nine and eight kills, respectively. Tullos went errorless in her 11 attempts, resulting in a .727 hitting percentage.
Defensively, freshman Annie Cooke tallied a career-high 21 digs, which led all players. With her 49 assists, Cooke also tallied her sixth double-double of the year. Helping Cooke in the back row was senior Abby Irvine and junior Torie Frederick. Irvine finished with a season-high 19 digs, while Frederick recorded 16 of her own.
