Redshirt senior hits three-run home run in sixth
HOUSTON – Behind a three-run home run from redshirt senior Lindsey Stewart-Vaughn in the bottom of the sixth, the University of Houston Softball team took down East Carolina by a score of 5-2 on Saturday afternoon.
The Cougars (12-26, 3-11 AAC) were slated to face the Pirates (10-23, 1-9 AAC) in a doubleheader on Saturday, but the second contest of the day was halted due to weather conditions. The game will be resumed on Sunday at 11 a.m. with Houston leading 3-1 in the top of the fourth with nobody out.
Houston's win on Saturday marks it second in a row, as the Cougars have now scored five or more runs in four of their last six games. Saturday also marked the first time this season Houston has won back-to-back conference games.
Stewart-Vaughn guided the Houston offense throughout the game, finishing the afternoon going 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored, along with her three-run shot. She was joined by senior Sarah Queen and sophomore Britaney Shaw as those with RBIs.
In the circle, sophomore Rachel Hertenberger got the nod for the second game in a row, having surrendered two runs, while striking out four batters in her five innings of work. Sophomore Logan Hulon game out of the bullpen and tossed two hitless innings to earn her second win of the series.
KEY INNINGS
5th | A two-run homer from the Pirates gave them the first lead of the game, but Houston wasted no time fighting right back with a pair of its own in the bottom of the inning to tie the score. With sophomore Paige Hulsey standing at third, Queen sent a flyball to the outfield that scored Hulsey for Houston's first run of the day. Shaw then stepped up to the plate and shot a two-strike pitch right up the middle to score Stewart-Vaughn from second and tie the game.
6th | After junior Kati Ray Brown walked to put pair of runners on, Stewart-Vaughn launched one well over the wall in rightfield to give Houston a three-run lead, proving the be the difference in the game.
