Cougars unable to complete comeback
Houston's seven runs against the Shockers (28-5, 11-1 AAC) are the most runs the Cougars (10-26, 1-11 AAC) have scored in American Athletic Conference action this season. The Cougars also saw three players record multiple hits on the afternoon in redshirt seniors Lindsey Stewart-Vaughn and Sarah Queen, along with senior Tierrah Williams.
Stewart-Vaughn and Queen also drove in multiple RBIs on the afternoon, with Queen launching her ninth home run of the season as well. Queen and sophomore Paige Hulsey each scored two runs on Sunday.
1st | The Shockers struck first and plated four runs in the inning off a grand slam.
4th | A single from Stewart-Vaughn allowed Hulsey and junior Kati Ray Brown to score on the play and cut the deficit to one.
5th | After Queen put a ball in play in the outfield, her speed on the bases forced a throwing error from Wichita State, resulting in her crossing the plate and tying the score at five. In the bottom of the inning, the Shockers responded with four more runs to reclaim the lead at 8-4.
6th | Houston showed its fight, as Stewart-Vaughn's second hit of the game scored Hulsey from second base. Queen then stepped up to the plate and sent one over the wall to put the Cougars back within striking distance, trailing 8-7. The Shockers immediately found one last rebuttal, crossing the plate twice in the bottom of the inning to seal the victory.
