Cougars Fall in Finale

WICHITA, Kan. – Wichita State used a strong start, highlighted by a four-run first inning, to race past Houston, 13-2 in seven innings and complete the four-game sweep on Sunday afternoon at Eck Stadium.

The Shockers (19-9, 7-1 AAC) pushed across four more on two hits in the fifth. One inning later, freshman Derek Shaver belted a grand slam, stretching Wichita Stat's advantage to 11 runs.

Houston (13-18, 1-7 AAC) looks to bounce back when it opens an eight-game homestand Friday against ECU. Friday's doubleheader will begin at 2 p.m. with the finale set for 45 minutes following Game 1. The contests can be seen on ESPN+ and heard on Stretch Live.

Houston first baseman Adam Becker (1-for-3) struck his first collegiate home run, clubbing a two-run shot over the left field wall in the fourth. The long ball trimmed Houston's deficit to two.

Houston starter Ben Sears (1-2) allowed eight hits and five runs in 2.1 innings. The right-hander walked one and did not record a strikeout. Wichita State starter Spencer Hynes worked around five hits and a pair of walks, allowing two runs while striking out four.
