Houston Sweeps UTRGV

EDINBURG, Texas – Closing out a road trip across the Lone Star State, the Houston tennis team swept its doubleheader against UTRGV by scores of 6-1 and 6-0 on Monday.

Postponed from Sunday due to rain, Houston (12-4, 3-1 AAC) began Monday with a 6-1 victory before closing things out in the evening with a 6-0 shutout. The pair of wins make the Cougars 10-0 all-time against UTRGV (3-12, 1-1 WAC).

Due to time constraints caused by a rain delay, the second match consisted of only singles play. UTRGV was unable to field a full six-person rotation for the late afternoon capper, so the Cougars also began that match with a 1-0 lead.

Four Cougars earned singles victories in both matches on the day: Mimi Kendall-Woseley, Phonexay Chitdara, Sophie Gerits, and Blanca Cortijo Parreno.

The victories on court four for Gerits were only her second and third dual wins this season. For Cortijo Parreno, the victories marked a return to the win column after dropping a match on Friday for the first time since January. The freshman standout is now 12-4 this season.

Chitdara and Kendall-Woseley split time in the top two spots with each getting a victory at each slot. Elsewhere, Azul Pedemonti also earned a singles victory in the morning, her 11th of the season.

As the two teams compete in doubles action in the first match, the Cougars hit few impediments as they charged towards three victories in order of the courts.

UTRGV earned one team point on the day after Katarina Sasroga topped Laura Slisane in the first match. Kendall-Woseley would get revenge for her doubles partner later in the day as she defeated Sasroga in straight sets.
