Houston travels to Baylor and UTRGV for final away matches
HOUSTON – The Houston tennis team continues its road swing with a trip to No. 7 Baylor on March 26 before traveling to UTRGV for a doubleheader on March 28.
Coming off two victories in New Orleans over Tulane and Southeastern Louisiana, the Cougars are now 10-3 this season with a trio of conference victories. The team is 5-1 away from home.
This will be the squad's second match against a ranked foe after falling to Texas A&M early in the season.
Live stats for Friday's match can be found here.
Pedemeonti and Parreno Power
As a doubles team, Azul Pedemonti and Blanca Cortijo Parreno have found great success. Individually, the pair has been incredible.
While the duo has an 8-1 record together this season, their singles record is even more impressive as neither Pedemonti nor Parreno have lost in singles action since January 18. Pedemonti was named The American Athletic Conference Player of the Week on March 2 and hasn't let off the gas since then while Parreno has emerged as a freshman standout throughout the season. Of their 16 combined victories, 12 of them have some via straight set victories.
Besovic Success
With 10 victories already this season, head coach Helena Besovic is up to 33 victories in her three seasons at Houston, including a severely shortened 2020 season due to COVID-19.
In her entire head coaching experience across McNeese and Houston, she has racked up 91 wins with a 0.655 winning percentage.
Series Histories
Against Baylor, Houston is 0-2 with losses in 2011 and 2012 both coming in Waco, Texas. Both were 6-1 defeats. Coach Besovic has two losses to Baylor in her seven seasons as a head coach, both coming while still at McNeese.
The script is flipped against UTRGV who the Cougars are 8-0 against. The last meeting came just over a year ago on March 7, 2020 when the Red and White defeated UTRGV in their final match of the 2020 season before it was canceled due to COVID-19. Besovic is 3-0 against the Vaqueros in her career with two victories as a Cougar and one while at McNeese.
UP NEXT
Houston has one more away match at Texas on April 2 before returning home for the remainder of the regular season. The team's return to home on April 9 will also be the program's rescheduled Senior Day.
