Baylor Too Much for Houston
3/26/2021 3:11:00 PM | Tennis
WACO, Texas – The Houston tennis team battled, but couldn't hang with No. 7 Baylor, as it fell 7-0 at Hurd Tennis Center on Friday afternoon.
This marks Houston's (10-4, 3-1 AAC) first loss in two weeks dating back to a 4-3 loss to Memphis on March 12. The Cougars now look to rebound with a doubleheader at UTRGV on Sunday.
Baylor (17-2, 4-0 Big 12) began the day earning the doubles point off a 6-2 victory on court one and a 6-3 win on court two. Court three would also finish in a 6-4 Bears victory.
In singles play, seventh-ranked Baylor continued to find success over Houston. The Cougars were unable to steal a frame off the Bears with Mimi Kendall-Woseley's 7-5 set the closest any individual came to doing so on Friday.
Losses from Blanca Cortijo Parreno, Phonexay Chitdara, and Azul Pedemonti put Houston down 4-0 and ensured the team loss, but the team's opted to play out all results on the afternoon. Parreno and Pedemonti's eight-match winning streaks ended with their straight set losses in Waco.
Sophie Gerits and Laura Slisane were unable to mount rallies on courts three and four before the afternoon ended with Kendall-Woseley going down 7-5, 6-1.
The team drops to 0-3 against ranked foes this season after losing to Texas A&M and Texas Tech earlier in the year. As a program, the Cougars have still never defeated Baylor.
