Houston earns 10th victory of the season with sweep of Southeastern Louisiana

NEW ORLEANS – Propelled by three straight set singles victories, the Houston tennis team swept Southeastern Louisiana 4-0 for its 10th win of the season on Saturday afternoon in New Orleans.

The Cougars ten victories come as the team has won nine of its last 11 matches, including three straight since March 12. Last season the team won nine matches before the cancellation of the season due to COVID-19.

Individual streaks also continued for the squad as Azul Pedemonti and Blanca Cortijo Parreno both notched their eighth consecutive singles victories. Neither underclassmen have lost since January 18 with both winning by straight sets against the Lions. They were also the only two Cougars to win both individual bouts on the team's road trip to New Orleans.

The afternoon match began with the Red and White claiming the doubles point. After the top pair of Mimi Kendall-Woseley/Laura Slisane ran through their opponents 6-0, Pedemonti and Cortijo Parreno finished off their foes 6-3.

Meanwhile, the pair of Phonexay Chitdara/Sophie Gerits, competing together for the first time since February 7, were up 5-2 at the time.

After her doubles success, Slisane continued to roll on court three. The freshman from Latvia was the first Cougar to finish as she ran through Flory Bierma for a 6-1, 6-0 victory.

Next, Pedemonti dominated her opponent on court five for a 6-0, 6-0 victory. In the sixth spot, Cortijo Parreno finished soon after with a 6-0, 6-1 win to clinch the Houston victory.

The Cougars are now 4-0 all-time against the Lions with two consecutive sweeps.
