Cougars pick up three more points on final day of action
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Swimming & Diving program posted two program records on the final of action at the 2021 NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships.
Houston closes out the meet with nine points, matching its most since the 2011 NCAA Championships. Mykenzie Leehy and Ioanna Sacha are the first Cougar swimmers to score at the meet since 2009. Houston finished 30th in the team standings and is the highest finisher from a non-major conference program.
"What a historic weekend for our program," said Head Coach Ryan Wochomurka. "I am very proud of how Ioanna, Mykenzie and Chase were able to compete against the nations best. To come away with points in four events and four All-American honors is a fantastic achievement. To finish this week in the top-30 and be the highest non -Power Five finisher in the country is fantastic. I'm very proud of this group here in Greensboro, our student-athletes cheering them on from Houston and our coaching staff. I'm very excited to build upon this and look towards the future. Go Coogs!"
Ioanna Sacha swam her way to the B-Final of the 200 Back after clocking a program-best 1:53.16 in the preliminary round. Sacha shattered the program record that she set only three weeks ago. In the B-Final, Sacha earned a seventh-place finish at 1:53.91 adding two points to the Cougar scoring total. This marks the second program record of the week for Sacha.
Coming off a stellar performance yesterday, Mykenzie Leehy earned her second trip of the weekend to the evening session. Leehy shattered her own program record in the 100 Freestyle, clocking a time of 48.56 to win the fifth heat. In the B-Final, Leehy earned an eighth-place finish at 48.80 to earn one point for the Cougars.
Chase Farris competed in the platform, as the first Cougar diver since 2015 to compete at the Championships. Farris finished right outside the top-16 in 18th-place with a five-dive score of 256.70. Her best dive of the day came on her third attempt when she earned a score of 58.50 after completing a Forward 3 1/2 Somersault Pike.
