Houston wins first road AAC opportunity of the season
HOUSTON – In their first road conference match this season, the Houston tennis team topped Tulane 4-1 for the first time since 2015 on Friday evening in New Orleans.
With the victory, the Cougars improve to 3-1 in American Athletic Conference action and 9-3 on the season. The team's nine victories matches their total from the COVID-19 shortened 2019-20 season.
Friday's match began with the Cougars grabbing the double point off of victories on court two and three. After Tulane earned the victory on court one, the Cougars needed wins in the final two doubles matches to earn the point. The pair of Azul Pedemonti/Blanca Cortijo Parreno took care of business 6-3 before the pressure turned to court two and the Houston pair of Phonexay Chitdara/Gabriela Giraldo. The duo comprised of a senior and a freshman came together and battled for a 7-5 victory.
Houston continued their success into singles play with three straight victories after Giraldo dropped her individual match to start off the session. With her straight set victory on court three, Sophie Gerits earned her first victory of the conference season and her first dual victory of the year.
On the final two courts, Pedemonti and Cortijo Parreno both required three sets to close out their opponents and clinch the Cougars' victory. In singles action, Pedemonti and Cortijo Parreno improve to 4-0 in AAC action and neither have losses since January 18 against Texas A&M.
Seniors Mimi Kendall-Woseley and Chitdara both found themselves in three-set battles in the top two spots before the Houston victory ended their matches early.

The Cougars will stay in New Orleans to face Southeastern Louisiana on Saturday in City Park Tennis Center. Houston then continues its stretch of road matches with a match at Baylor on March 26 before traveling take on UTRGV in a doubleheader on March 28.
