HOUSTON – The Houston tennis team topped Cincinnati 4-0 on Thursday in their American Athletic Conference match-up.
The Cougars (8-3, 2-1 AAC) battled both Cincinnati (2-6, 0-2 AAC) and the weather to finish out the match. After about 47 minutes of action in the morning the match was suspended due to rain before eventually restarting around 4:15 p.m.
At the time of the suspension, the duos of Phonexay Chitdara/Gabriela Giraldo and Mimi Kendall-Woseley/Laura Slisane were, respectively, one and two points away from victory. Within a minute of returning to action both Cougars duos had won and the home team had the doubles point.
In singles play, both Blanca Cortijo Parreno and Azul Pedemonti breezed through their foes in straight sets. On court six, Parreno, who finished first, won handily with a pair of 6-1 frames. Pedemonti swept her first set 6-0 on court five before closing her opponent out 6-3 for the win.
Pedemonti has not lost since January 18 with six victories and one unfinished match, mostly from the five-spot. She was named the American Athletic Conference Player of the Week on March 2.
The clinching victory came on court one between each team's best, Mimi Kendall–Woseley for Houston and Ioana Guna for Cincinnati. After splitting the first two frames, Kendall-Woseley dominated the final stanza 6-2 for the individual and team victory.
With the Houston victory in hand, Chitdara's, Giraldo's and Sophie Gerits' matches all went unfinished. Giraldo and Gerits had both lost the first set, but were tied 4-4 in the second frame, while Chitdara was knotted in the third set against her foe.
Gerits' appearance was her first of the conference season.
Due to the rain, all Senior Day festivities will be postponed to a date to be determined later.
