PALM CITY, Fla. – The University of Houston Men's Golf program posted its low team score of the tournament in the Final Round of the Valspar Collegiate Invitational on Tuesday at The Floridian Golf Club.
Houston shot a 3-under 281 as a team and moved into ninth in the final standings with a 54-hole score of 872 on the 6,921-yard, par-71 course. Four Cougars in the starting lineup shot par or better led by senior Alexander Frances' 69.
This event is annually one of the nation's elite collegiate tournament, and the 2021 tournament was no exception with nine Top-35 teams and six Top-10 squads from the latest Golfstat national rankings.
Starting his day off No. 10, Frances drained a birdie on the par-5 13th hole before enduring back-to-back bogeys on Nos. 14-15. Fortunately, those would be the only blemishes on his scorecard for the rest of the day.
The Stege, Denmark, native returned to even par with a birdie on No. 17 and, following six straight pars, made two birdies on his final four holes to tie for 16th at 1-under 212.
After three straight pars to start his Final Round, senior Matt Cole alternated birdies and pars on the next six holes to close out his first nine and added another birdie on No. 1 to post a 70 and move into a tie for 46th at 224.
Sophomore Austyn Reily and senior Andrew Gibson each shot even-par 71s with Reily tying for 26th at 216 and Gibson tying for 50th at 226. Junior Braxton Watkins tied for 52nd at 228.
Four Cougars competed as individuals at the tournament. Seniors Logan Young and Luke Long tied for 36th at 220, while sophomore Trip Morris tied for 50th at 226. Freshman Hanseung Chang tied for 54th at 229.
No. 1 Florida State captured the team championship with a score of 831 to finish four strokes ahead of No. 3 Wake Forest. Ohio State finished third at 838 with No. 7 Arizona State (843), No. 29 USF (845), No. 9 Clemson (847), No. 4 Pepperdine (848) and No. 10 SMU (850) rounding out the Top-Eight leaders.
Wake Forest's Alex Fitzpatrick enjoyed his third straight round in the 60s and earned medalist honors at 12-under 201. Frederik Kjettrup (Florida State) and Maxwell Moldovan (Ohio State) were tied for second at 204, while Turk Pettit (Clemson), Ryggs Johnston (Arizona State) and McClure Meissner (SMU) were tied for fourth at 207.
